Dr. Jane Landers
Dr. Jane Landers is a leading historian of the African diaspora and the Spanish colonial Americas, renowned for her groundbreaking research on the free Black community of Fort Mose. For more than three decades, she has uncovered the lives, identities, and experiences of the men, women, and families who sought freedom there. Her definitive works — including Fort Mose: Colonial America’s Black Fortress of Freedom and its expanded second edition — illuminate the community’s global significance and enduring legacy. Landers’ scholarship continues to shape public understanding of Fort Mose and remains foundational to its interpretation today.

Did You Know!
Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, or Fort Mose, was:
- Destination of the original Underground Railroad, running south.
- First legally sanctioned free Black community in what’s now the United States!
Fort Mose Historical Society was founded in 1996, to serve as a Citizen Support Organization (CSO) for Fort Mose Historic State Park.
The Society’s mission is ‘to tell the Fort Mose story’.
We’re also grateful for invaluable assistance from our Partners including Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine Garrison and numerous reenactor groups who serve as ‘opposing forces’.
